Bor Dam

Bor Dam is an earth-fill dam on Bor river in Seloo Tehsil, Wardha district in Maharashtra. It is located in the vicinity of the Bor Wildlife Sanctuary, which offers its surroundings with green hills a great picnic spot and weekend getaway. It has got are jungle-like lush green surroundingshence a lot of varieties of birds’species can be seen.

History

The dam was constructed as part of irrigation projects by the Government of Maharashtra in the year 1965. The Bor Irrigation Project is located in the Bor National Sanctuary and Tiger Reserve. The storage capacity of the dam is 127.42 MCM. The elevation of the dam above the lowest foundation is 36.28 m and it has the length of 1158 m.

Bor Dam is situated about 40 KM away from Wardha city. Dam has the catchment area of 38.075 thousand hectares.

The region is mostly dry throughout the year, and Summers are extreme. The temperatures in summers are around 30-40 degrees Celsius.
Winters here came to be as low as 10 degrees Celsius.
The average annual rainfall in this region is around 1064.1 mm.

Visitors can visit Bor Reserve Sanctuary. This sanctuary, with rich biodiversity, is a beautiful retreat from the hectic and tiring life in the city. Tourists can plan their tour with a visit to Wildlife Sanctuary Interpretation Centre & Bor Safari. Apart from the reserve there are other places of interest in the region. These places include Buddhist temples and also visit the beautiful Hiuen Tsang Buddhist Meditation Centre. Bor Lake has also attracted a lot of touristsowing to its scenic beauty.

Nearest tourist places

  • Gitai Mandir: This temple is located at a distance of 31.4 KM from the dam. It is a unique temple in India as it is roofless. It has only walls made of granite on which 18 adhyay (chapters) of Gitai (Marathi translation of holy book Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta) are carved. The walls enclose a gorgeous small park. The temple was inaugurated in the year 1980 by Acharya Vinoba. Apart from this, Acharya Vinoba Bhave and Jamnalal Bajaj’s lives have been showcased at this place.
  • Vishwa Shanti Stupa: Vishwa Shanti Stupa was anambition of Nichidatsu Fujii or Fujii guruji as he was called by Rashtrapita M. K. Gandhiji. It is in the vicinity of Gitai Mandir. Statues of Buddha are mounted on a stupa in four directions, each direction is believed to be depicting important event in his life. It is neighboured bya small Japanese Buddhist temple with a huge park.
  • Magan Sangrahalaya: This museum was inaugurated by Rashtrapita M. K. Gandhi in the year 1938. It is situated in Maganwadi near the village's centre of Science. It showcasessouvenirsassociated withfarming, animal husbandry with respect to dairy, industries, differentvarieties of charkhas, khadi, handicrafts prepared by rural artisans etc.
  • Sevagram Ashram: Sevagram Ashram holds an historic importance as it was the place of residence for Rashtrapita M. K. Gandhi during 1936 to 1948. After the Dandi yatra 1930, Gandhiji did not to return to his ashram at Sabarmati. After spending a couple of years in jail, he travelled around India and, at the invitation of the Gandhian Industrialist Jamnalal Bajaj, stayed for some time in Wardha City at Jamnalal Bajaj's bungalow.  
  • Paramdham Ashram/ "Brahma Vidya Mandir": This ashram was established by Acharya Vinoba Bhave in the year 1934 at Pawnar alongsideRiver Dham with a spiritual purpose. Along with this he also established Brahma Vidya Mandir ashram here. During excavation for the construction of the ashram, many sculptures and idols were unearthed, these are kept in the ashram and visitors can see them.
  • Kelzar Ganpati Mandir: Kelzar Ganpati Mandir is about 26 KM from Wardha on the way to Nagpur. This temple is situated on a hill and it offers the scenic beauty of forests and hills near the Bor National Tiger Reserve and the Bird Sanctuary. The place also has great importance from mythological point of view and it has been mentioned in Mahabharata as well.

The typical indigenous cuisines of this city are mainly based on rice and bread such as Bhakri, Chapati or Ghadichi Poli. Upma, Vada Pav, Chivda, Poha are some of the most important dishes. Some of the famous sweets and desserts found in Wardha are Puran Poli, Modak, Gulachi Poli, Gulab Jaam, jalebi, Laddu, and Shrikhand.

Bor Dam is a great picnic spot. The best time to visit here is during the rainy season and winter season. Bor Dam is surrounded by Bor Tiger Reserve. One can visit the sanctuary in any month of the year but the months from April to May remain the ideal season to visit the Bor Wildlife Sanctuary.
