History

Trimbakeshwar is one of 12 jyotirlingas situated all over India. The symbol of Lord Shiva i.e. Shivalingais installed in the sanctum. The present structure of the temple was built between 1740-1760 in the village Trimbak, by Third PeshwaBalajiBajirao. The structure of the temple is very elegant and rich. Entrances have deepamalas (pillars to hold lamps). There is a big idol of Nandi in the hall or mandap area of the temple. The walls and pillars in the temple have beautiful carvings. The mythological significance of this place is KumbhaMela. Circumambulation around the temple and Brahmagiri hill are considered a religious ritual to be followed by devotees. 
A legendary mythological story narrates the origin of the river Godavari and about the temple. The temple has numerous smaller shrines in the vicinity and a large ritual water tank. The sacred river Godavari originates from the nearby hill called Brahmagiri. The belief is that the river disappears from the hill and reappears near the temple. There is an elaborately constructed Kunda, i.e. water tank considered as one of the most sacred spots other than the temple.
Trimbakeshwara is on ancient trade routes linking coastal ports with commercial centres like Nasik. The region of Trimbakeshwar is surrounded by rich tribal culture. Trimbakeshwar and tribal centres like Mokhada and Jawhar are well connected.
