Manikdoh Dam

ManikdohDam is on the Kukadi river near Junnar. It was constructed with the purpose of irrigation and hydroelectricity generation.

The dam falls in the gravity dam category. Junnar has an historical importance as ait has served as a trading and political centre from long established period. The nearby Fort of Shivneri was the birthplace of Maratha king Shivaji, the founder of the Maratha Empire. Junnar was declared the first tourism taluka in Pune district by the government of Maharashtra on 9 January 2018.


The dam is located in the Ghod basin and is a part of the Kukadi project, which constructed five dams in the region. Geographically it is surrounded by the Sahyadri ranges on the edge of the Konkan area.


The region has a hot-semi arid climate year-round with an average temperature ranging from 19-33 degrees Celsius. 
April and May are the hottest months when the temperature reaches up to 42 degrees Celsius.
Winters are extreme, and the temperature can go as low as 10 degrees Celsius at night, but the average daytime temperature is around 26 degrees Celsius.
The annual rainfall in the region is around 763 mm. 

Things to do

It is a good destination for a one-day picnic with families, trekking and bird watching. There are five more dams in this region and some also operate water sports activities.

  • Malshej Ghat: Malshej Ghat offers many lakes, waterfalls and appealing mountains to the visitors. It is a perfect destination for adventure activities such as trekking, bird watching, waterfall rappelling, nature trails and camping.
  • Pimpalgaon Joga: Pimpalgaon Joge Dam is an earth-fill dam on Pushpavati river, a tributary of Kukadi River Near Junnar. It is located in the vicinity of Malshej Ghat. This beautiful place offers different look in various seasons. The dam is also serving as second home to the migratory birds like pink flamingos, Alpine Swift, etc.
  • Shivneri Fort: It is one of the strongest forts of India Shivneri Fort is a 17thcentury military fortification located near Junnar. It is the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the emperor and founder of the Maratha Empire.
  • Harishchandragad: Harishchandragad Fort, a 6th century monument located at an altitude of 1,424 metres above mean sea level. A lot of trekking enthusiasts and pilgrims pay a visit to this place.
  • Naneghat: Also referred to as Nanaghat or Nana Ghat, is a mountain pass in the Western ghats range between the Konkan coast and the ancient town of Junnar in the Deccan plateau. A major attraction for trekking enthusiasts.
  • Jivdhan Fort: Jivdhan is a hill fortress situated 1KM near Ghatghar in Junnar Taluka. The fort is in the Sahyadri mountain range.
  • Lenyadri Buddhist Caves: Lenyadri, sometimes called Ganesha Lena, Ganesha Pahar Caves, are a series of about 30 Buddhist caves which are carved out in the rock, located about 18.7 KM to the east of Manikdoh dam.
  • Leopard Rescue centre Manikdoh: The centre has been inhabited by more than 30 leopards and temporary or lifetime care for leopards is providedwho are injured by villagers or trapped in conflict situations.

Visiting Rule and Time, Best month to visit

The place is accessible throughout the year but the best time to visit is during the monsoon as it is surrounded by Sahyadris the natural view is astonishing. Summers are a bit hot.
