Bodhalkasa Dam

Bodhalkasa dam is an earth-fill dam on the Bhagdeogoti river near Tiroda. One of the tranquill places in the region where one can enjoy the serenity of nature. It is a perfect place to relax and explore nature through jungle safari and nature's pathway.

History

Bodhalkasa dam was built in 1917 with a purpose of improvement in the irrigation. It is operated by the Government of Maharashtra. The height of the dam is 19.2 m and is 510 m long.

Geography

Bodhalkasa is in the eastern part of Maharashtra. The region is called Vidarbha. Bodhalkasa is a village surrounded by dense forests on three sides and the dam on the fourth side. It is very close to state of Madhya Pradesh.

Weather/Climate

The region is mostly dry throughout the year, and Summers are extreme. The temperatures in summers are around 30-40 degrees Celsius.
Winters here came to be as low as 10 degrees Celsius.
The average annual rainfall in this region is around 1064.1 mm.

Things to do

The Mangezari Nagzira Jungle entry gate is 4.4 KM, (8 mins) away from Bodhalkasa; one can enjoy a jungle safari here.
The Ghoti Jindatola Natural Trail is 3.1 KM, about 5 minutes away from Bodhalkasa; one can enjoy a light trek or a simple walk here.
Some water sports activities like riding, paddling, speedboats, etc. are also being introduced recently in Bodhalkasa.

  • Navegaon National Park: The park is situated in the southern part of the Gondia district, 85 KM away from Bodhalkasa. It is located in the eastern part of Maharashtra state and constitutes an area of 133.782 KM. It is ofimmense importance from the point of view of nature conservation. The place has inhabited more than 200 species of birds, 9 species of reptiles and 26 species of mammals includingTigers, Panther, Wolf, Jackal, Jungle cat, Small Indian Civet and Palm Civet.
  • Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary: Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary is located between the Bhandara district and the Gondia district of Maharashtra. It is situated only 15.6 KM away from Bodhalkasa. This sanctuary is bounded by the nature and enriched with delightful landscapes, flourishing vegetation and serves as a living open to the sky museum to explore and admire nature. 
  • Kachargadh Caves: Kachargadh is located at a distance of 73 KM from Bodhalkasa and is a popular tourist destination because of the natural caves situated here which are believed to be as primeval as 25000 years old according to the stone weapons found in this localityby the archaeologists. It is situated in the dense forest and has attracted enthusiastictrekkers, local tribes use this place for worshipping.
  • Hazra Fall: It is 69 KM. away from Bodhalkasa dam. This waterfall is cascading, surrounded by lush green vegetation, also serves as a good camping site. It is just 1 KM. away from the Railway station in Darekasa.

In Vidarbha, in general, spicy food is popular.
A local delicacy, Saoji cuisine, is known for its meat or egg curry, especially its intense spicy flavour.
There are many authentic Maharashtrian vegetarian options to explore as well.
As for sweets, ‘santra barfi’ or ‘orange barfi’ is famous.
Since Bodhalkasa is a rural area, you will find some local eateries or ‘dhabas’ there.

Summer should be avoided while visiting the Vidarbha region. One can visit Bodhalkasa from November to February, as it is a cooler season.
