About Girgaon Chowpatty

Girgaon Chowpatty also known as Bombay Chowpatty is a beach in the Mumbai city of India. It is in the town side of Mumbai and is decorated with a line of known art deco buildings running parallel to it. The beach is approx 5 KM long and has Marine Drive adjacent to it that allows enjoying the view of the sea while driving. Marine Drive is also known as Queen's Necklace as the street lights resemble a string of pearls in a  necklace when viewed at night from an elevated point anywhere along the drive.

History :

The beach is popular for the Ganesh Visarjan ceremony when thousands of people come to immerse the idols of Lord Ganesh in the Arabian Sea. The place hosts 'Ram Leela' play every year on the 10th day of Navratri an effigy of Ravana is burnt.

Geography :

Girgaon, also known as Girgaum, derives its name from Sanskrit terms Giri and Gram, which means hills and village, respectively. Girgaon is a village nestled on the twin hills of Malabar and Cumbala. The hills stretch into the plains of Girgaum Chowpatty Bandstand and Khareghat Colony.

Weather/Climate :

The prominent weather in the region is rainfall, the Konkan belt experiences High Rainfall (ranges around 2500 mm to 4500 mm), and the climate remains Humid and warm. The temperature reaches up to 30 degrees Celsius during this season.

Summers are hot and humid, and the temperature touches 40 degrees Celsius.

Winters have comparatively milder climate (around 28 degrees Celsius), and the weather remains Cool and Dry

The beach has several amusement activities for tourists that include ferry wheels, merry-go-rounds and gun shooting galleries for children. One can also try horse and camel joy rides. Many visitors go to Chowpatty beach to sit and relax after a busy day.It's a wonderful place to enjoy the breeze and watch the sun sink into the Arabian sea.

ISKCON temple: It isalso known as Hare Rama Hare Krishna Temple. This beautiful marble structure has numerous halls for prayers and preaching. (0.9 KM)
Marine Drive – This 3 KM long sea-facing promenade connects Nariman Point to Malabar Hill. Girgaon Chowpatty falls on the way. Marine Drive provides an uninterrupted view of the Arabian Sea.
Taraporewala Aquarium – Taraporewala Aquarium is the oldest fish aquarium in India. It has over 400 species of marine and freshwater fishes in a long glass tunnel. (1.4 KM)
Hanging Gardens – Hanging Garden is a vast green space near Girgaon. It is about 4 KM away from the beach and offers a serene spot for yoga, meditation and workouts. (4 KM)
Shree Siddhivinayak Temple: This holy place is located in the Prabhadevi area 11.9 KM north of the Girgaon Chowpatty, and is one of the most flourishing temples in Mumbai, built approximately in the 18th century and is dedicated to Lord Ganesha.

The place is accessible throughout the year. The best time to visit is from October to March since the plentiful rainfall lasts from June to October, and the summers are hot and humid. Tourists should check the timings of high as well as low tides before entering into the sea. High tides during the monsoon season could be dangerous hence should be avoided.
