The Konkan region is well known for its natural wealth. It is even well known for the production of rich fruit varieties and allied products. Alphonso Mango, popularly known as Hapoos mango is considered the King of Fruits.  
This mango is unique and most loved among all the mango varieties in India. The Alphonso mango has a natural scent, should be yellow and have a red tint on top of it and should be soft when ripened.  The Hapus Mangoes exported around the world, mainly in western countries. The Alphonso is a seasonal fruit. It is available from Mid April to End of June. The Ratnagiri district is quite popular for the production of quality mangoes. It is quite astonishing that more than 65,000 acres of land are under mango cultivation.  The biggest production of Alphonso mangoes in India is done in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra State. 
Alphonso is one of the most expensive varieties of Mangoes in India.

History

The Hapoos Mango or the Alphonso Mango was introduced by the Portuguese in India. It was named after the Portuguese viceroy Alfonso de Albuquerque. He introduced various varieties of mangoes but the Alphonso survived with time.

Cultural Significance

The leaves of mango trees are used in various places for sacred purposes and various rituals. Mango is also the National Fruit of India.
