About Nagpur Central Museum (Nagpur)

Nagpur Central Museum is situated in Nagpur City which stands as a prominent housing for many artefacts belonging to various sectors. The museum includes sculptures, coins and many more ancient and incredible things. Nagpur Central Museum is being taken care of by the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Maharashtra.

History

The Nagpur Central Museum was founded in 1862 by Sir Richard Temple, the Chief Commissioner of Nagpur. This place is quite popularly known as ‘Ajab Bangla’. It is even noteworthy that this is one of the oldest museums in India. It is even believed that Sir Richard Temple donated his personal collection to this museum and even convinced the royal families of the area to donate their personal collection of artefacts to the museum.  
In present days, this museum includes different types of galleries such as Natural History, Mammal, Avian and Reptile, Stone and Sculptures, Inscriptions, Tribal Art and Culture, Arms and Weapons, Painting, Art and Craft, Archaeological and Nagpur heritage Gallery etc. 
There are some articles that are placed in Nagpur Central Museum tracing back to the Chalcolithic period. 
It's quite amusing to see the dinosaur fossils found in Madhya Pradesh which are kept in this museum. There is the right foot of ‘Jainosaurus’ which has been kept in the Natural History Section of this museum. In addition, the skull of Elephant Namadicus is kept too. 
There are some unique paintings belonging to the Bombay School of Art preserved in this museum. The Nagpur Central Museum has a well-stocked library inside its premises which guides the tourists about the history of the region and the country too.

●    The museum can be visited at any time of the year. Photography is allowed but without flash, a           prior has to be made for this.
●     The entry fee is ₹5. 
●    The timing of the museum is from 10:00 A.M to 5:00 P.M.
●    This Museum is open from Tuesday to Sunday. It is closed on public holidays.
