About Ujani Dam

Ujani Dam is a panoramic place from the Solapur district. It is constructed on the Bhima river and is hence also known as the Bhima dam. It features a variety of indigenous and migratory birds; and is famous for bird watching, especially flamingo and wildlife birds.

Ujani Dam construction began in 1969 and it was commissioned in June 1980. It is a combination of earth cum concrete masonry dam. The water reservoir created by Ujani serves multiple purposes like irrigation, drinking, hydroelectricity generation, etc. The total length of the dam is 2,534 m. The reservoir created by the Ujani dam is also one of the largest backwaters in India.


Ujani dam is situated in Solapur District. This dam is constructed on the River Bhima, to the south east of Pune and north west of Solapur. The height of the dam is 56.4 metres, and the length is 2,534 metres. The dam is about 8.0 KM upstream of the bridge across the Bhima River on the Pune-Solapur Road.


The region has a hot-semi arid climate year-round with an average temperature ranging from 19-33 degrees Celsius. 
April and May are the hottest months are when the temperature reaches up to 42 degrees Celsius.
Winters are extreme, and the temperature can go as low as 10 degrees Celsius at night, but the average daytime temperature is around 26 degrees Celsius.
The annual rainfall in the Ujani dam region is around 1096 mm.

Things to do

Ujani Dam is one of the biggest dams with a large backwater area. It offers a boat ride to enjoy the scenic beauty of the dam. The best time for boating is in the early morning or evening to see the sunrise/sunset.
Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary is situated along the backwaters of Ujani Dam. The panoramic view a river with a variety of indigenous birds, including flocks of flamingos attracts the tourists to this place for birdwatching as well as photography.

  • Bhuikot Fort (76.2 KM) – Thehistoric specialty of this fort is that the freedom fighters such as Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Maulana Azad were kept in the prison in this fort by Britishersandthe book Discovery of India was written at this place by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. The place also hosts a tiny animal park where one can see several rabbits, ducks, peacocks and monkeys.
  • Shri Siddeshwar Temple (73.8 KM) - Siddheshwar temple is sacred to Lord Siddheshwar, who is considered as an incarnation of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. The temple is highly visited by pilgrims as it is the place where Shri Siddheshwar attained Samadhi. 
  • Akkalkot Swami Samarth Maharaj Temple (127 KM) - The Saint is believed to be the reincarnation of Lord Dattatraya.Hugenumber of pilgrims visit the place every day. The present temple is built around a famous banyan tree. This is the same banyan tree under which Shri. Swami Samarth Maharaj used to meditate and address to the followers.
  • Tulja Bhavani Temple (169 KM) - Believed to be built somewhere in the 12th century, Tulja Bhavani Temple is an important Hindu pilgrimage centre in Maharashtra. Tulja Bhavani is believed to be one of the three and half ‘Shakti Peethas’ of Goddess Durga.

Solapur is generally famous for its spicy food and the extensive use of peanuts in its preparations. Tourists can taste Chutney made from peanuts, called Shenga chutney, spicy mixture of peanuts, red chilli powder salt, and other spices accompany many dishes. Crisp jowar bread is a common food in Solapur because jowar is widely cultivated here. Khara Mutton (Mutton Achar) or salty goat curry are the other popular dishes of this region.
