Bhira Dam is in Roha taluka near the western coast of India in the Raigad district of Maharashtra. The dam is located on the river Kundalika and is also known as the Tata Powerhouse dam. The dam is famous for hydroelectricity generation, but at the same time, it is much popular as a tourist destination.

History

Bhira dam, popularly known as Tata Powerhouse dam, is located in a small picturesque village with a marvellous waterfall near Kolad. The Dam, constructed in 1927 by the Tata Power Company, is believed to be one of the giant hydroelectric projects in India. The water from this dam is used for irrigation purposes by the nearby villages. The power generated from this unit has been a greatest supportto the many industrial activities in the Mumbai Pune region.

Geography

Bhira is in the mountainous region of Sahyadri in Western Maharashtra. It is 132 KM southeast of Mumbai and 104 KM to the west of Pune.

The climate at this place is hot and humid with abundance of rainfall, the Konkan belt experiences High Rainfall which ranges around 2500 mm to 4500 mm. The temperature reaches up to 30 degrees Celsius during this season.
Summers are hot and humid, and the temperature touches 40 degrees Celsius.
Winters have a comparatively milder climate (around 28 degrees Celsius), and the weather remains Cool and Dry.

Bhira is well known for its beauty, especially in the monsoon season the Sahyadri ranges get covered with clouds and the lush greenery attracts the tourers from Mumbai and Pune to this place.
The place is famous for boating, trekking, photography and picnics. Some seasonal waterfalls also form around the dam region.

• Devkund waterfall: Situated 1.2 KM away from the dam, Devkund Waterfalls is a mesmerizing waterfall surrounded by green fields and high cliffs. Tourists can enjoy the picturesque scenery as well as the trek.
• Tamhini ghat: Situated 23.7 KM south of Bhira dam, this place is famous for its scenic beauty and cascading waterfalls. It is a popular weekend getaway for trekkers as well as nature lovers. 
• Kolad: Situated 29.4 KM west of Bhira. Kolad is very popular for adventure sports such as river rafting as well as bungee jumping. It is also popularly known as Rishikesh of Maharashtra for its rapids and river rafting.
• Plus-valley trek: Located 31.3 KM away from Bhira, the medium level trekking trail is known for its breath-taking scenery. It Is near Tamhini ghat.
• Raigad fort: Situated 51.7 KM to the south of Bhira, the fort was constructed under the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1674. It has served as the capital of swarajya. At this fort, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was crowned.
