Kelwe

Kelwe is a coastal town located in Palghar Taluka on the western coast of India in the Palghar district of Maharashtra. The place is known for its long coastline. it's a popular weekend getaway for tourists from Mumbai.

History :

It is one of the lesser-known tourist places and is untouched by commercialization. Very few tourists visit the place during weekdays, if you want some peace from your hectic schedule this is the best place to visit. It is the best place for relaxation around Mumbai and it becomes more pleasant during the early mornings and sunset. One can hear the beautiful rhythm of swaying tree leaves and sea waves. During weekends the place is visited by Mumbaikars.

Geography :

Kelwe is a coastal place located in the Konkan region of Maharashtra in between Futki creek and Kelwe creek on the coast of the blue Arabian sea. It is 104 KM to the north of Mumbai and 120 KM to the south of Daman. The beach has suru (casuarina) trees along the coast.

Weather/Climate :

The prominent weather in the region is rainfall, the Konkan belt experiences High Rainfall (ranges around 2500 mm to 4500 mm), and the climate remains Humid and warm. The temperature reaches up to 30 degrees Celsius during this season.

Summers are hot and humid, and the temperature touches 40 degrees Celsius.

Winters have a comparatively milder climate (around 28 degrees Celsius), and the weather remains Cool and Dry

Shitladevi temple: Located at a distance of 0.4 KM to the east of Kelwe beach. This is an ancient temple which was renovated by Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar.
Kelwe fort: Located 2.2 KM to the south of Kelwe beach, the fort was constructed by the Portuguese during the 16th century and it was also utilised by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Kelwa Dam: Located 11.8 KM away from Kelwe, the dam is well known for its tranquil surroundings. Many people visit this place during monsoon season to witness its scenic beauty.
Danda creek bridge: Located 2 KM away from Kelwe beach, tourists come here to enjoy the beautiful sea view by sitting here.
Ashapuri and Shiv mandir: Situated 12 KM away from Kelwe beach. The temple is in the sea and the goddess Ashapuri is situated in the cave.

The place is accessible throughout the year. The best time to visit is from October to March since the plentiful rainfall lasts from June to October, and the summers are hot and humid. Tourists should check the timings of high as well as low tides before entering into the sea. High tides during the monsoon season could be dangerous hence should be avoided.
