About Bhandardara Dam (Ahmednagar)

Bhandardara dam was built on River Pravara during the British regime in the western ghat region of India. It is one of the scenic beauties in the Sahyadri range located in the AkoleTaluka of Ahmednagar district.

Unique Features / Exclusivity 

Bhandardara Dam, also known as Wilson Dam has been established on the Pravara River and was inaugurated in 1926. It has an elevation of approximately 150 metres above ground level. The reservoir formed due to this dam is popularly known as Arthur Lake or Bhandardara lake.

Geography

The Bhandardara dam is on the Pravara River in the Sahyadri mountain range of Maharashtra. It is also a popular hill station in the western ghat region. The dam is located to the south of Nashik, northeast of Mumbai and southeast of Kalsubai mountain.

The average annual temperature in the region is 24.1 degrees Celsius.

Winters are extreme in this region, and the temperature goes as low as 12 degrees Celsius.

The sun is very harsh during summers. The region gets more rain during summer than winters. The temperature during summer goes above 30 degrees Celsius.

The average annual rainfall is around 1134 mm. 

Things to do

Bhandardara has the natural gift of scenic beauty, lush greenery, and pleasant weather. It is a popular destination for tourists travelling from Mumbai, Pune, Ahmednagar and Nashik. One can visit popular tourists’ attractions such as Arthur Lake and Wilson Dam. Boating can be done at the lakes. There are two waterfalls in this region, Randha falls and Wilson falls which is also known as Umbrella fall which is located just near the dam’s wall. The Umbrella fall is a famous attraction amongst tourists during the monsoon.
There is a park neighbouring Umbrella dam, which serves as a beautiful picnic spot. Kajva (Firefly) Festival: The place offers another natural marvel where one can see glowing trees due to the presence of immeasurable fireflies at the end of May.

Nearest tourist places

●    Randha Fall: Located 11 KM away from the dam there is a beautiful waterfall known as Randha fall situated on the Pravara River. The height is approximately 170 ft, the waterfalls fierce fully in the gorge in the monsoon season.
●    Kalsubai Peak: The highest peak in Maharashtra is at 11KM to the northwest of the Bhandardara dam. Though the trekking is difficult it is advised to take experienced trekkers and local guides from the nearby village.
●    Ratangad fort: The beautiful fort is at a distance of 16.5 KM near Ratanwadi village. The fort is believed to be as old as 2000 years. It was embraced into Swarajya by ChhatrapatiShivajiMaharaj during his reign. It has a famous temple of Lord Shiva known as Amruteshwar.
●    Alang Fort: Situated at a distance of 28.5 KM to the northwest of Bhandardara dam, the place is also popular amongst trekkers. This is one of the tough treks in the region known as Alang, Madan and Kulang of Kalsubai range in Sahyadris. The trekking level is difficult due to its geographical attributes as well as dense forest and heavy rains.
●    Igatpuri: Igatpuri is at a distance of 41.5 KM from the Bhandardara dam. This place is famous amongst tourists for its scenic beauty. It has many picturesque locations around it. It serves as a popular hill station on the Mumbai Agra route.

Visiting Rule and Time, Best month to visit

The best time to visit Bhandardara is during the monsoon season. The waterfalls and surrounding areas flourish during the monsoon.
Summers are harsh; the dried dam makes it a dull place from February to May. The end of summer is a suitable time for the Kajva (Firefly) festival.
