Beed district (also known as Bid or Bhir) is a Maharashtra administrative district in India. Beed is home to the district headquarters. The district covers 10,693 km2 and has a population of 2,161,250 people, 17.91 percent of whom live in cities (as of 2001) The area of Beed has had several kings and kingdoms throughout its history. Champavati nagari was the ancient name for this city.In the shape of multiple city entry doors (called Ves in local language) and city protection walls, the city proudly displays some historical monuments displaying indications of previous splendour. About Beed: The Nizam's State included BHIR DISTRICT, as well as the other four districts of the Marathwada region. Following the 1956 reorganisation of the states, the region was absorbed into the then-Bombay State. Bhir, along with the other districts of Marathwada, has been a part of Maharashtra since the state of Bombay was divided into Maharashtra and Gujarat in 1960. On the Deccan Plateau, on the banks of the Bensura River, sits the town of Beed (also called Bendsura or Bindusara). Bensura is a Godavari river tributary that originates in the Balaghat range, some 30 kilometres south-west of Beed, near the village of Waghira. The river separates the city into two sections: smaller eastern and larger western.Basalt dominates the soil, which is coarse and rocky. In the city's northern reaches, there are thin layers of fertile black soil. The Bensura River is a fast-flowing, seasonal river. In 1955, the Bendsura Project (capacity 7.106 mm3) was built on the river near the village of Pli, some 10 kilometres south of the city. The river is narrow and seems like a stream in some parts of the city.
