Powai Lake

Powai Lake is an artificial lake in Mumbai. It is near the Powai village in between the Andheri and Vikhroli suburbs of Mumbai. The area has been developed significantly in the last few decades, and is considered one of the most expensive real estate hubs from Mumbai.

History

The area where Powai Lake now is was originally Powai valley, which comprised a central village and small set of huts surrounding it. The British authorities created this lake in 1891 by building two dams across the Mithi River to provide water supply to Mumbai. The Maharashtra State Angling Association (then called Bombay Presidency Angling Association), formed in 1936, currently controls and manages the lake. In 1995, The National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP) included Powai Lake among the 'ten main lakes' of the country to be revived and improved. This program was launched in April 2002 and was implemented by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. As a result of this move, the condition of the lake has considerably improved.

Geography

Powai Lake is in the north-eastern suburb of Mumbai, Maharashtra. The depth is 3 m at the periphery and 12 m at its deepest end. It is located to the north of Mumbai and southwest of Thane.

Weather/Climate

The climate at this place is hot and humid with abundance of rainfall, the Konkan belt experiences High Rainfall which ranges around 2500 mm to 4500 mm. The temperature reaches up to 30 degrees Celsius during this season.

Summers are hot and humid, and the temperature touches 40 degrees Celsius.Winters have a comparatively milder climate (around 28 degrees Celsius), and the weather remains Cool and Dry.

After having a tranquil experience at Powai Lake, one can choose to visit Powai Garden and soak in the beautiful view of the beautiful lake. Powai's shopping haven, Galleria (2.6 KM) is a great place to spend time with friends and family. One won't want to miss going to Hakone Entertainment (2.2 KM), to explore many activities like Go Karting, paintball, snooker, and much more.

  • Mumbai Film City: Here we get a peek into the day -to - day life behind the scenes of the Hindi film industry - Bollywood. You will find over 10 studios in the Film City complex and various other ready -to -shoot outdoor setups. Temples, playgrounds, and arrangements for shooting train sequences are all available here. Mumbai Film City is about 16 KM away from Powai Lake. Movies in regional languages are also shot there
  • Chhota Kashmir Park: Chhota Kashmir Park is a small but colourful garden on the way to Mumbai Film City. It is situated in Aarey Colony, about 9 KM from Powai Lake. Lush green lawns, trees and flowery bushes make the park a popular picnic spot. A small lake is situated here which add s to the beauty to this verdant place which remind s people about the charm of Kashmir valley.
  • Sanjay Gandhi National Park: This national park too is a popular picnic spot and favourite place among wildlife and nature lovers. It offers numerous activities like boating, cycling and nature treks. It is located at a distance of about 18 KM from the lake. Sanjay Gandhi National Park also organises a jungle safari in which you can explore the varied flora and fauna here. Deers, monkeys and lions are some animals one can see during the safari.
  • Kanheri Caves: The Kanheri Caves complex is a part of Sanjay Gandhi National Park. You can reach the place trekking through the greens and then climbing up and down a series of rock-cut steps. There are 109 caves in the complex and these served as Buddhist monasteries during their prime. The first caves date back to the 1st century BCE, while the most recent developments happened around the 11th century CE. The caves have many statues and paintings of Buddha, some of which remain unfinished.
