About Kalsubai

Kalsubai is known as the Everest of Maharashtra, is in the western ghats of Maharashtra. It is the highest peak in the Sahyadri mountain range of Maharashtra at an elevation of 1646 mts. It is easily accessible from Mumbai and Pune. This trek offers a breath-taking combination of natural environments like waterfalls, forests, grasslands, and historic forts.

History

The curtailed summit provides a modest area of flat land which holds a sacred temple of Kalsubai.  A traditional prayer service is held twice in a week i.e. on every Tuesday and Thursday by a priest. The localites celebrate the Navratri festival by organizing a fair. Visitors from nearby villages visit the temple. Several stalls to provide pooja materials for the devotees are set up around the summit. On these special occasions, localites participate in this fair which helps to complement their livelihood, and provides them with an opportunity to respect the holy mountain.

Geography

The peak along with the adjoining hills has spread along a east west direction which eventually merges with the daunting escarpment of the Western Ghats at almost right angles. They form a natural boundary demarcating the IgatpuriTaluka, Nashik district to the north and AkoleTaluka, Ahmednagar district to the  south. The mountain is a part of the Deccan Plateau, with its base at an elevation of 587 metres above average sea level.

Weather/Climate

The region has a hot-semi arid climate year-round with an average temperature ranging from 19-33 degrees Celsius.
April and May are the hottest months when the temperature reaches up to 42 degrees Celsius. Winters are extreme, and the temperature can go as low as 10 degrees Celsius at night, but the average daytime temperature is around 26 degrees Celsius.
The annual rainfall in the region is around 763 mm.

The place is popular for trekking. Adventurous activities such as Hiking, Trekking and Rock climbing are available.

One can plan to visit the following tourist places along with Kalsubai Peak

  • Bhandardaralake: Beautiful lake with nice surroundings located 16.2 KM to the south of Kalsubai. Good place for a weekend visit. One can visit here during or after the monsoon.
  • Bhandardara: Bhandardara has many attractions such as picturesque views, cold climate, waterfalls, lakes, etc. A small hill station with lots of activities located 15 KM to the south of Kalsubai peak.
  • Sandhan Valley: Sandhan valley is a beautiful carved valley in the magnificent Sahyadri mountain range, part of Western Ghats in Maharashtra. 32.3 KM away from Kalsubai peak.
  • Ratangarh fort: This fort is in Ratanwadi. One of the must-visit places during monsoon, it also has a famous temple of lord shiva. It is 26.7 KM away from the Kalsubai peak.
  • Randha waterfall: The clear water of the Pravarariverfiercely falls from a height of 170 ft into a magnificent gorge, the place can be visited during monsoon season only. It is 14.6 KM away from Kalsubai.

A primary health care centre is available near Bhandardara.
The nearest post office is available at Warungshi located 6.7 KM away from Kalsubai.
The nearest police station is at a distance of 26.2 KM at Ghoti.

Visiting Rule and Time, Best month to visit

June to August for Monsoon (rain) Trek, September to October for flowers trek, November to May night treks are recommended. During the May end, you can see the blanket of pre-monsoon clouds below the peak. Camping is available at Kalsubai after monsoon retreats. During monsoon, camping is not possible as strong winds and rains will blow the tent away.
