History

Mani Bhavan is the place blessed with the holy presence of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation India. The real name of Mahatma Gandhi was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi lived in Mani Bhavan for a considerable time, hence Mani Bhavan has achieved a prominent place in the history of India, especially in the Gandhian Era of Indian Freedom Struggle. Mani Bhavan is a witness to many historical events.
Mani Bhavan belonged to Shri Revashankar Jagjeevan Jhaveri was a strong devotee of Mahatma Gandhi. Shri Jhaveri stood as an affectionate host for Gandhiji during his stay in Mumbai and now this house is being recognised as Gandhi Memorial. Mani Bhavan is a two-storied building that remained at the centre of Gandhian activities during the time of the Indian Freedom Fight.
During his stay in Mani Bhavan (1917-1934), Gandhiji came forward as the powerful leader in the Indian Freedom Fight, and he started with Satyagraha which was his strong weapon. Hence, this place became the centre of Gandhian activities during Gandhi's stay here. This time was even noticed as it saw Gandhiji’s health which was not in good condition. Mahatma Gandhi got his initial lessons of carding cotton from a person who used to go through Mani Bhavan.
In the year 1919, Gandhiji launched the Satyagraha movement from Mani Bhavan against the Rowlatt Act. Gandhiji started his historic weekly bulletin named “Satyagrahi’ on 7th April 1919 from Mani Bhavan only. Gandhiji was in opposition to the Indian Press Act and for the said purpose he started ‘Satyagrahi’. Gandhiji commenced his historic fast at Mani Bhavan on 19th November 1921 to restore the peace in the city of Bombay.
The Congress Working Committee held a meeting at Mani Bhavan on June 9, 1931. After the return of Gandhiji from the Round Table Conference, he had a discussion with the Congress Working Committee in Mani Bhavan about the situation. This was the time when Gandhiji decided to commence Civil Disobedience Movement on 31st December 1931. However, he was arrested from his tent on the terrace of Mani Bhavan on the morning of 4th January 1932. The Congress Working Committee held its adjourned meeting at Mani Bhavan on June 17 and 18, 1934.
