About Mumbai (Mumbai City)

Mumbai is in Maharashtra in the Konkan division of the western coast of India. Mumbai (also known as Bombay, the official name until 1995). It is the capital city of Maharashtra. Mumbai has consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in India. Mumbai is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Mumbai is a mix of Iconic old-world charm architecture, strikingly modern high rises, culture and traditional structures.

History

Mumbai lies on the Konkan coast in the westernpart of India and has a deep natural Harbour. The name Mumbai is derived from the name of goddess Mumbadevi.  The city is popularly known as the Commercial, Financial and Entertainment capital of India. Mumbai is the first city in India to operate trains from Mumbai to Thane in 1853. Churchgate is the first station of the Western Railway suburban network of Mumbai. The human habitation of Mumbai has existed since the South Asian stone age which is believed to be as old as 1200 to 1000 BCE; the Kolis and Aagri (Maharashtrian fishing communities) were the earliest known settlers of the island. In the 3rd century BCE, the Maurya Empire gained control and transformed it into a centre of Buddhist culture and region.

Geography

Mumbai is on a narrow peninsula on the southwest of Salsette Island, it is located to the east of Arabian Sea, north of Thane Creek and to the south of Vasai Creek. Mumbai lies at the mouth of the Ulhas River on the western coast of India, it is located 149 KM to the north west of Pune.

The place has hot and humid climate with abundance of rainfall, around 2500 mm to 4500 mm. The temperature reaches up to 30 degrees Celsius during this season.
Summers are hot and humid, and the temperature touches 40 degrees Celsius.
Winters are comparatively mild withtemperatures around 28 degrees Celsius.

  • The Elephanta caves are also called GharapurichiLeni. Elephanta Caves were assigned as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 1987.  It is located in Gharapuri, Maharashtra 21.8 KM via Eastern Freeway from Mumbai 
  • Shree Siddhivinayak Temple: This holy place is located in the Prabhadevi area 10.5 KM south to the Mumbai and is one of the most flourishing temples in Mumbai, built approximately in the 18th century. Dedicated to Lord Ganesha.
  • The place is popular for the Arnala Beach and the Arnala Fort, which was originally built by the Portuguese. Arnala is situated 7 KM away from Virar, the last stop for the suburban railways.  
  • Manori Beach is often known as “Mini-Goa” of Mumbai. The Samudreshwar Temple, the Buddhist Pagoda and even the Sufi Dargah to visit. It is 19 KM away from Mumbai. 
  • Lonavala is hill station famous for its scenic beauty and picturesque landscapes. Along with its lakes, streams, gardens or lush greenery, the place has major attractions like Bhushidam, Kune falls, Rajmachi, Tiger point, Lohagarh Fort, Bhaja caves, Nagphani, Karla caves and Pawna Lake. It is located at a distance of 83 KM from Mumbai. 
  • Mahabaleshwar, the city that prides itself on being the highest hill station in the western section of India.known for its large production of berries like strawberries, mulberries, gooseberries and raspberries, Mahabaleshwar is famous for amazing food and drinks. Major attractions: Mahabaleshwar temple, Mount Malcolm, Rajpuri caves, Pratapgarh Fort, Tapole and Pnchagani. It is located at a distance of 231 KM from Mumbai. 
  • The scenic landscape of Alibaug.Beaches, forts and temples. Major Attractions are KanakeshwarDevasthan Temple, Alibag Beach, and Kolaba Fort.
    It is located at a distance of 95 KM from Mumbai.
  • Rock-cut cave temples and forts. An incredible landscape with rich greenery and is surrounded by lofty mountains.Major attractions are White Water Rafting in the Ulhas River, Hiking or Mountain Climbing, Rappelling in Bekare Waterfalls, and Kondane Caves.
    It is located at a distance of 62 KM from Mumbai. 
  • Karnala city is located in the Raigad district. It is very well known for its bird sanctuary which inhabits more than 150 species of birds and many other wild animals. Trekking to the Karnala Fort, you can also indulge in hiking to KalavantinDurg. 55 KM from Mumbai.
  • It is famous for both natural and man-made attractions that add charm and allure to this place. Durshet is even famous for jungle safaris. Major attractions are Uddhar Hot Spring, Trekking to Sarasgad and Sudhagad, Pali Fort, Mahad Ganpati Temple and Water Sports in Kundalika River. It is at a distance of 81 KM from Mumbai.
