Vada Pav

Vada pav, a popular snack in Maharashtra, is said to be a part of the Marathi culture.

In Marathi, batata vada literally translates to "potato fritter." It is a mash-up of the term meaning "potato" (batata) and vada, a type of fried savoury food. Pav is a shortened version of the Portuguese word pav, which signifies bread.

Vada pav, often spelled wada pao (About this sound listen), is a vegetarian fast food dish from the Indian state of Maharashtra. A deep-fried potato dumpling is placed inside a bread bun (pav) that has been cut almost in half through the centre. It's usually served with one or more chutneys and a green chile pepper.Although it began as an inexpensive street meal in Mumbai, it is now available in food stalls and restaurants throughout India. In line with its history and physical resemblance to a burger, it is also known as Mumbai burger.

Boiled potatoes are mashed and combined with green chilies, garlic, mustard seeds, and seasonings. The material is then formed into a ball before being dipped in gramme flour batter and deep fried. The resulting fritter is served inside a bread bun with one or more chutneys and fried green chilli.
