Jalgaon is a district in the Khandesh region of Maharashtra known as the ‘Banana City of Maharashtra’. The region contributes approximately two-thirds of Maharashtra's banana production. The district produces 3.4 million tonnes of Bananas every year. Banana Research Station Jalgaon, a regional research station since 1960, is under the Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri and is the only premium research station in Maharashtra state working on the banana crop.

History

Jalgaon Bananas are exported to various countries across the world. It is said that in the 1960's an initiative was taken by the government to promote Banana plantation and commercial production in Khandesh. The initiative taken by farmers like Vasantrao Mahajan has resulted into the rise of Jalgaon as the Banana Hub

Cultural Significance

Bananas play a vital role in the economy of Jalgaon district. Banana is a very common fruit seen used in religious rituals in India. It has got Socio-religious associations in Indian Culture.
