About Solapur
Various dynasties controlled the Solapur District, including the Andhrabhratyas, Chalukyas, Rashtrkutas, Yadavas, and Bahamanis. The name ‘SOLAPUR' is thought to be derived from two words: ‘SOLA' which means sixteen, and ‘PUR' which means village.Aadilpur, Ahmedpur, Chapaldev, Fatehpur, Jamdarwadi, Kalajapur, Khadarpur, Khandervkiwadi, Muhammadpur, Ranapur, Sandalpur, Shaikpur, Solapur, Sonalagi, Sonapur, and Vaidakwadi were all regarded to be part of the current city of Solapur. However, recent study has revealed that the word SOLAPUR is not originated from a conglomeration of sixteen settlements. The settlement was known as ‘Sonnalage', which was pronounced as ‘Sonnalagi', according to Shivayogi Shri.inscriptions Siddheshwar's from the time of the Kalachuristis of Kalyani. Even during the Yadava era, the settlement was known as Sonnalagi. The town was called as Sonalipur, according to a sanskrit inscription unearthed at Kamati in Mohol following the defeat of the Yadavas in Shake 1238. Sonalpur was the name of the town according to one inscription found in Solapur fort, while Sandalpur was the name of the town according to another inscription found in the fort's well.Sandalpur was the name of the town during the Muslim period. As a result, it's most likely that the name Solapur evolved over time by eliminating the "na" from Sonalpur. Following this, the British rulers pronounced Solapur as Sholapur, and thus the district's name.
