Nagpur is a city in central India, part of the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. It has been given the status of the second capital of Maharashtra. Nagpur is known as the Orange City too. The orange of Nagpur has been used and adapted in various ways including making a mithai.
The Nagpur Oranges are rich in various vitamins like Vitamin A, B,C. The oranges are exported to various countries of the West and some of the Gulf Countries.
History
Linguistically it is said that the word orange is derived from Sanskrit Language and its original name is ‘naranga’. The fruit reached Europe through trade and later on came back to our country as Orange. The regions that first cultivated oranges were from North East India and Southern China. Several ancient civilizations were engaged in citrus cultivation. Oranges are said to be a hybrid of Mandarin and Pomelo. Pomelos originate from India while Mandarins originate from China.
Cultural Significance
Orange has become the major commercial crop in the Nagpur region and plays a vital role in culture. It has become a cultural identity in Nagpuri Cuisine.
