Mahabaleshwar is one of the popular destinations among tourists as a hill station. During British occupation, the crop of Strawberries was introduced here. Though this is so, modern agricultural studies have helped farmers to convert this into a commercial crop. Various plants make strawberry products and market them across the world. Strawberry is a seasonal fruit and doesn’t survive in hot climates. Thus, various products are made in the Mahabaleshwar region from strawberries.
There are about 7 species of Strawberries grown in Mahabaleshwar. The Mahabaleshwar Strawberry has up to 80% of water content, which makes them juicier than other strawberries. 
Strawberries are also used in medicines and various cosmetic products and several food items.

History

The story of the birth of Strawberry dates back to the 14th Century in which the King of France experimentally introduced us to this fruit. After the colonization of countries across the globe the British started cultivating strawberries in various countries and regions which included the Mahabaleshwar of India.

Cultural Significance

Mahabaleshwar has gardens promoted by commercial ventures based on the Strawberry theme. Recently there was a strawberry festival introduced to promote the berry.
