Akola

Akola is a district in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The city of Akola is the district headquarters. Akola district forms the central part of Amravati Division, and was a former British Raj Berar Province. Area of the district is 5,431 km². It is bounded on the north by Amravati District, to the east by Amravati District and by Washim District, to the south by Washim District, and to the west by Buldhana District.

Washim was earlier a part of Akola. The Battle of Argaon, (Adgaon near Akot), took place on November 28, 1803, between the British under the command of Governor Arthur Wellesley and the forces of Maratha under Bhonsle of Nagpur during Second Anglo-Maratha War. Many old forts are located in Akola District viz.

Akola district is situated in the middle east of Maharashtra state. This district is situated between North 20.17 to 21.16 latitude and East  76.7 to 77.4 longitude. There are ranges of Gavilgad hills on the north of the district.   Anjangaon, Daryapur and Nandgaon khandeshwar tehsils of Amravati district and Karanja tehsil of Washim district are on the east.

Washim district is  on the south side and Buldhana district on the west. Total area of ​​Akola district is 5428 sq. Km. Which is  1.76% of the total area of the state . In the district area wise largest tahsil is Akola tahasil. It consists area of ​​1134.13 sq.km. Telhara tehsil has the lowest area of ​​628 sq. Km.

There are 7 tehsils in Akola District Akola, Balapur, Patur, Barshitakali, Murtizapur, Akot and Telhara. Washim district was formed by dividing the district in 1998 . Akola city corporation was established on 1 October 2001.

There is  1 Municipal corporation, 5 Municipal councils, 1 Nagar panchayat in district. The headquarter of the district is at Akola and the divisional headquarter is in Amravati.

Location :
Akola is a city in Akola district in Vidarbha region in the state of Maharashtra in central India. It is about 600 km east of Mumbai( “Bombay”) and 250 km west of Nagpur. Akola is the administrative headquarters of Akola District located in Amravati Division.

By Air:
Akola Airport (also known as Shivani Airport) is the domestic airport of Akola city at an elevation of 999 ft (304 m) and has one runway (4,600×145 ft). The airport is just 7 km away from the city on National Highway No. 6. The nearest international airport is at Nagpur (250 km) and at Aurangabad, Maharashtra (265 km) . Renovation and operation of Akola airport is taken by Airport Authority of India.

By Train:
Akola railway station has good railway connectivity with direct trains to Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Okha, Surat, Nanded Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaipur, Kolhapur, Pune, Kamakhya, Indore, Mhow, Ujjain, Khandwa, Ratlam, Bhopal, Chittorgarh, Nagpur, Gondia, Bilaspur, Howrah, Hatia, Puri, Madras, Hingoli, Purna, Parli Vaidnath, Tirupati, Ganganagar, Secundarabad and Nampally, Hyderabad.
Akola, situated on both the broad gauge Howrah-Nagpur-Mumbai line and the Kacheguda-Jaipur meter gauge line, is an important junction for passengers from North and South India and also for freight trains.Important railway stations in Akola region with their codes are Paras, Gaigaon, Akola Junction (AK), Murtizapur Junction (MZR) and are under Bhusawal-Badnera Section of Bhusawal Division of Central Railway.

By Bus:
The “NH6” runs through Akola from Hazira (Surat) to Kolkata. NH6 is a part of Asian Highway 46. Maharashtra state transport buses are most commonly used by people to travel to rural parts of the region. They are the cheapest means of transport.State-owned and private air-conditioned bus services run daily to most major cities to and from Akola. The bus frequency is good. Bus service is available for cities like Nagpur, bhopal, Indore, Hyderabad, Nanded, Amravati, Mumbai, Nashik, Jabalpur.

Akola is located north-central of Maharashtra state, western India, on the banks of the Morna River. Although it is not considered a common tourist destination, Akola is an important city due to its history, culture, politics, and agriculture. It also has a prominent road and rail junction in the Tapti River valley that functions as a commercial trading center.
