Mumbai suburban district, Maharashtra, India.

History

Portuguese were the first Europeans to establish their rule on the soil of India. Mumbai was part of their Northern province, and they built several forts for administrative and surveillance purposes. ThePortuguese built this fort in 1640 as a surveillance station on Mahim bay in the South, the Arabian Sea in the Westand the Northern Sea Route for Mumbai.

It also had seven cannons for its safety. A freshwater estuary was here that was used for consumable water for the passing boats. Because of this, the fort got its name 'Palace de Aguada'. Its strategic significance was marked in 1661 when the Portuguese gave the Land of Seven Islands as an endowment to the British. After the ascent of Maratha Power at Bandra in the eighteenth century, this fort was a threat to the British for shielding their region in Mumbai.

The fort was won by the Marathas in 1739 CE and was with them until 1774. Though the British had lost the war, they figured out how to enter the fort and took it over from Marathas. Around 1830, the Britishers had given different parts of the Salsette Island to a Parsi philanthropist Byramjee Jeejeebhoy. Jeejeebhoy raised his home on a similar hill on which the fort is located and the cape was later even renamed as Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Point. The fort is now owned by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and after the makeover of the fort, the preservation of natural rock formations has been done and pathways were constructed.
