Jatra(Fair) which is celebrated every year.
Districts/ Region
Sindhudurg District, Maharashtra, India.
History
Bharadidevi Temple is considered as a ‘Jagrut Devasthan’. Bharadidevi Goddess is famous for her
power of wish-fulfilment (Navas). People express their wishes to her and once they are fulfilled they
visit her again with gratitude and strengthened belief. There are many legends of the origin of Bharadi Devi, one such is that a Goddess appeared in the form of a stone plaque in the rocky soil 400 years ago. Since then she is called Bharadidevi. The Bharadidevi’s Anganewadi Jatra is decided by
the consent of the villagers. The method of arriving at the consent for the day of Jatra is very
interesting. After the completion of harvest, the villagers get together for hunting of a wild animal to
offer as Prasad to the Goddess. The animal is then cooked and distributed among the villagers who
then decide on a suitable day for Jatra. The rituals begin at 4.00 A.M and end on the 1st day at 10.00
P.M. The next day the rituals again start at 4.00 A.M and end in the afternoon, this day is called
‘Mode Jatra’ (End of fair). The Jatra is for 1 and half days, but the festivities go on for 4 to 5 days.
Though the temple is of a modern period, it is constructed in a traditional style.
