History
On the scenic Dadar Shore, the memorial of a prominent figure in itself is a place one must visit. Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar was the chief architect of the Indian Constitution, an economist, a lawyer, a philosopher and very importantly a social reformer.
Located in Dadar (Mumbai), the Chaityabhoomi Memorial was inaugurated in December 1971 on his 15th death anniversary. Each year on the 6th December, the memorial sees groups of devotees and followers flooding in huge numbers from different parts of the country on the occasion of his death anniversary.
The present building is two storeys constructed over the cremation place. It is in the shape of a Stupa, depicting Babasaheb embracing Buddhism. His ashes, the main relic of Chaityabhoomi, is in a small square-shaped room on the ground floor. Sculptures and portraits of Ambedkar and Lord Buddha, forever decorated in flowers and garlands, are a divine sight to his followers. The second floor is a white marble rounded shape dome with a symbolic umbrella on the top and is a resting place for Bhikkhus (Buddhist monks). This hall is surrounded by a square-shaped railing. One of the amazing features at the memorial is the placement of Torana gateways to the North and South of the Stupa, finely decorated with reliefs of animals, flowers and people, along with a Dharmachakra at the top showing the symbolization of Buddhist teachings. There is a replica of the Ashoka Pillar made in the memorial.
