About Chandrapur According to folklore, the district of Chandrapur was once known as ‘Chanda.' The name of the place was ‘Lokapura,' which was later changed to ‘Indpur,' and finally to Chandrapur. It was known as Chanda district during the British colonial period, but was renamed Chanrapur in 1964. Wairangad, Kosala, Bhadravati, and Markanda were also ancient sites in the region. For a long time, Hindu and Buddhist kings are reported to have dominated the area. Later, during the 9th century, Gonds overthrew Dana Chiefs who governed Chandrapur, and Gond Kings dominated the area until 1751, when the Maratha period began. Raghuji Bhosale, the dynasty's last king, died intestate in 1853, and Nagpur province, along with Chandrapur, was seized by the British Empire. Chandrapur became an independent district in 1854, and in 1874, it was divided into three tehsils: Mul, Warora, and Bramhpuri. However, in 1874, the Madras district of upper Godavai was disbanded, and four tehsils were united to Chandrapur to form a single tehsil with Sironcha as its seat. One tehsil's headquarters were moved to MUl from Chandrapur in 1895. At 1905, a new tehsil with headquarters in Gadchoroli was formed by transferring zamindari lands from the tehsils of Bramhpuri and Chandrapur. Area-11,443 sq.
