Guhagar

Almost all the places on the coast line of Maharashtra are indeed very beautiful, calm, and serene in nature.  Guhagar, a part of this region, has it all. In fact, it is the gem of Ratnagiri district. Located between the river Vasishthi and the Jaygad creek, Guhagar is a tiny town on the Konkan coast with a beautiful secluded beach, making it a perfect getaway destination.

History :

Guhagar is a tehsil of Ratnagiri district in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. The place is famous for its clean and sandy beaches. Since it was not known to many till it's the economy matured during the 1990s with the introduction of the Dabhol Power company, this beach still preserves its serenity. Therefore, it is the cleanest beach in the entire Konkan. As the name Guhagar means house of caves, one can see several caves in surrounding regions.

Geography :

Guhagar is a coastal place  located in between the Vashishti river and Jaigad creek in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. It has Sahyadri mountains on one side and the Arabian sea on the other. It is located 44 KM to the west of Chiplun, 89 KM away from Ratnagiri and 257 KM away from Mumbai.

Weather/Climate :

The prominent weather in the region is rainfall, the Konkan belt experiences High Rainfall (ranges around 2500 mm to 4500 mm), and the climate remains Humid and warm. The temperature reaches up to 30 degrees Celsius during this season.

Summers are hot and humid, and the temperature touches 40 degrees Celsius.

Winters have a comparatively milder climate (around 28 degrees Celsius), and the weather remains Cool and Dry

Things to do :

Guhagar is famous for its untouched beaches covered with coconut trees, betel nut and mango trees. The beaches are very long, wide and tranquil. It is the best place to relax and take a break from hectic life.

This beach is untouched, and  hence it does not have other activities that are found at other beaches in the Konkan.

One can plan to visit the following tourist places along with Guhagar. Vyadeshwar temple: The ancient temple of Lord Shiva has beautiful Shivalinga carved out in black stone.

Palshet: The place is famous for the pre-stone age cave of Susrondi, which is located 13 KM south of Guhagar.
Gopalgad Fort: The fort with a beautiful lighthouse is situated 12 KM north of Guhagar.
Velaneshwar: Situated 25 KM south of Guhagar beach. The place is known for Lord Shiva and Kalbhairava temple. It is also famous for its beautiful beach.
Hedvi: The place is famous for Dashbhuja Ganpati temple and a wonderful geological feature called ‘Geo’. This feature is a must-watch during the high tides.

Guhagar is accessible by road and railway. It is connected to NH 66, Mumbai Goa Highway.  Maharashtra State transport buses are available from Mumbai, Pune, and Ratnagiri.

Visiting Rule and Time, Best month to visit :

The place is accessible throughout the year. The best time to visit is from October to March since the plentiful rainfall lasts from June to October, and the summers are hot and humid. Tourists should check the timings of high as well as low tides before entering into the sea. High tides during the monsoon season could be dangerous hence should be avoided.
