Lingmala

Lingmala waterfall is the most visited waterfall in Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra State, India. Known for its serene surroundings and lovely environment, the waterfall begins around 600 ft. over a cliff and is accompanied by rich greenery.

History    

A Yadava ruler from the thirteenth century constructed a tiny temple and water tank at the wellspring of the river Krishna. The region around Mahabaleshwar called the Vale of Jawali was under the rule of More Clan, the vassals of the Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur. In 1656, the founder of the Maratha Empire, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj by virtue of political conditions, killed the then leader of the vale of Javali, Chandrarao More, and seized that area. Around that time Shivaji Maharaj constructed a fort close to Mahabaleshwar entitled Pratapgad. The fort is still in the possession of Shivaji Maharaj's descendants. The waterfall is located nearby Mahabaleshwar.


Geography     

Lingmala waterfall is situated at a distance of 7.3 KM toward the east of Mahabaleshwar in the Sahyadri mountain ranges. The forest bungalow of Lingmala is situated close to the falls. The water here plunges from a height of roughly 600 ft.

Weather / Climate     

The region has a hot-semi arid climate year-round with an average temperature ranging from 19-33 degrees Celsius. 
April and May are the hottest months in Pune when the temperature reaches up to 42 degrees Celsius.
Winters are extreme, and the temperature can go as low as 10 degrees Celsius at night, but the average daytime temperature is around 26 degrees Celsius.
The annual rainfall in the region is around 763 mm.

Tapola: On the south of Mahabaleshwar, the Tapola ghat in the Koyna valley is a small town on the extreme backwaters of the Triveni Sangam of the Koyna, Solshi and the Kandhari river. Popularly known as Mini Kashmir due to the serenity and the beauty of the Shivsagar lake which is surrounded by Sahyadri from three sides is an excellent boating and picnic spot. (34 KM)

Mapro Gardens: It is a garden park in the hill station of Panchgani, near Mahabaleshwar, known for its strawberry production. It is in the village of Gureghar and was developed and maintained by a food processing company known as Mapro. (5.1 KM)

Krishnabai Temple: Krishnabai Temple is an old temple situated few meters away from PanchGanga Temple in Old Mahabaleshwar. The temple also offers enchanting views of the Krishna valley and surrounding countryside. (7.5 KM)

Rajpuri Caves: Rajpuri Caves are one of the region’s oldest and most visited attractions. Also called Kartik Caves, these caves house a beautiful temple of Lord Kartikeya, the elder son of Lord Shiva. This is one of the most visited temples in Mahabaleshwar. Tourists from around the country visit the caves because of their religious significance. (19 KM)

Panchgani: Located 12 KM to the east of Lingmala waterfall is another beautiful hill station in the Sahyadri mountain range. Famous for its scenic beauty, it is one of the biggest tablelands in the world. Parasailing and other adventure activities are available at Panchgani.
