History
Vinayaka is a form of Ganesha or Ganapati, a popular HIndu deity in Maharashtra. The pilgrimage of eight Vinayakas is very popular among the devotees of Ganesha in maharashtra. One of the most worshiped among the Ashtavinayak group of temples is Mayureshwar of Morgaon. The local oral tradition informs us that due to the presence of numerous peacocks in the area the temple was named as Mayureshwara (Mayura- peacock and Ishwara - God). The main temple of Mayureshwar is built in black stone. Temple has a dome like super structure, which stylistically can be dated to the Bahmani period. The temple was under protection of Peshwa's during the Maratha empire. Temple has four gates with various sculptures of god-godesses. One can see 8 different idols of Ganesha in 8
different corners of the temple. The main idol of Ganesh or Mayureshwar is in sanctum. The mythological story of Morya Gosavi is very well known among locals and devotees. Morya gosavi was a well known 16th century saint. It is believed that the Lord Ganesha had blessed him. He
is known for his devotional writings in Marathi.
