History

The fort of Ramshej is on the high tableland at a fascinating sight. We can note the remains of the outermost structural wall and entrance of the fort situated on the ground level. We can experience the initial climb is gentle and gets difficult while we reach the top. The entrance gate located at the East side of the fort is rock-cut. This offers a glimpse of the tradition of ancient Indian rock cave architecture and it's an amusing sight to see. The fort includes a few structural remains which recall the legendary history of this fort. Several rock-cut tanks explore a variety of forms. This makes the fort unique in its sense. The fort even contains the hidden entry door on the eastern side leading you to the path to Bhorgad, which is hardly 11 KM away from Ramshej.
We can trace the history of the Ramshej fort back to 1644 when Aurangzeb had appointed and sent Shahab-ud-din Khan to destroy the Nashik fort. It is believed that a wooden platform was made for Shahab-ud-din, and around 500 men were holding it. Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj's brave Maratha warriors, during the siege, came to relieve their people. After their arrival, Khan Jahan moved from Nashik to help Shahab-ud-din Khan in his difficult times. However, the wooden platform was later on burned to destroy it.
