Siddheshwar

Siddheshwar temple is at the heart of the city of Solapur. It is a well-fortified temple on an island in a lake.

History

Siddheshwar temple and the lake is believed to be built by Shiddharameshwara also known as Siddheshwara, a yogi who was a devotee of ShriMallikarjuna of Srisailam. ShriSiddheshwara is one of the five acharyas of the Lingayat cult in Hinduism. He was a great mystic and Kannada Poet who is known for his devotional poetry. He was also a social reformist.
Yogi Siddharameshwara (SIddheshwara) built the temple and installed 68 shivalinga-s in the temple as per the instructions by his teacher. The temple complex consists of his Samadhi in marble placed in the middle of the temple. There are temples of Ganesha, Vithoba-Rakhmai, and many other Hindu deities. The mount bull of Shiva Nandi in this temple is coated with silver. The devotees believe that the temple is supposed to be the place where Shiva and Vishnu reside together.
The best time to visit the temple is the MakarSankranti festival, in the month of January. A grand celebration takes place for three days. Also, there is a three day fair called GaddaYatra.

April and May are the hottest months when the temperature reaches up to 42 degrees Celsius.
Winters are extreme, and the temperature can go as low as 10 degrees Celsius at night, but the average daytime temperature is around 26 degrees Celsius.
The annual rainfall in the region is around 763 mm.
