Veer dam is situated on the Nira river in Satara district. It gives a stretch of 7-8 KM from along the River Nira. This entire belt along the river is a popular attraction amongst birdwatchers.

History

The dam is owned by the Govt of Maharashtra and was built for hydroelectricity and irrigation purposes. It got into operation in 1965. With water availability throughout the year, it is rich in biodiversity, more than 170 different species of birds have been registered at Veer Dam.

Veer Dam is located in Maharashtra, India. It is at the border of the Pune and Satara districts. The power station installed capacity is 9w(2×4.5mw). Water is used for farming as well as for irrigation.

The region has a hot-semi arid climate year-round with an average temperature ranging from 19-33 degrees Celsius. 
April and May are the hottest months in Pune when the temperature reaches up to 42 degrees Celsius.
Winters are extreme, and the temperature can go as low as 10 degrees Celsius at night, but the average daytime temperature is around 26 degrees Celsius.
The annual rainfall in this region is around 1100 mm.

Veer dam is an ideal location for birdwatching, photography and nature trails. The dam is in full bloom during the monsoon, and for the rest of the months, tourists can enjoy a day at the dam's reservoir. Tourists can also visit the Dakshin Kashi Shiva temple.

Bhatghar Dam: - Bhatghar Dam is a gravity dam on Velvandi river near Bhor, Pune district in the state of Maharashtra in India. One of the oldest dams in Maharashtra was constructed by the British. The dam wasopened in 1927. The distance between the Veer dam and Bhatghar Dam is 59 m (37 KM).

Thoseghar waterfalls: - Thoseghar waterfalls is a scenic spot located near the small village of Thoseghar, 20 KM from Satara city, at the edge of the Konkan region, in Western India. There are a series of waterfalls, some of them 15 to 20 metres and one approximately 200 metres in height. People come from all over Maharashtra to visit the areas, especially during the rainy or monsoon season, July to November. 

Kaas Plateau: - The Kaas Plateau reserved forest is a plateau situated 25 kilometres west of Satara city in Maharashtra, India. It falls under the Sahyadri range of the Western ghats, and it became a part of a UNESCO world natural heritage site in 2012. Kaas has more than 850 different species of flowering plants. A must visit place for Botany enthusiasts, florists, nature lovers and Photographers.

Pratapgad Fort: Pratapgad literally 'Valour Fort' is a large mountain fort located in Satara district, in the Western Indian state of Maharashtra. The fort has historic importance as it had witnessed the famous battle between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Afzal khan. The fort is now a popular tourist destination. 

Ajinkyatara: - Ajinkyatara (meaning "The Impregnable Star") is a fort on one of the seven mountains surrounding the city of Satara in the Sahyadri mountains of Maharashtra, India. The height of the fort is 1,356 metres (4,400 ft).

Bhakri, spiced cooked vegetables, dal and rice is the famous food. Kandi pedha is a famous sweet in Satara. However, it is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Maharashtra. The restaurants here served a variety of cuisine.

The place is accessible throughout the year, the best time to visit Veer dam is December to March as Tourists can see a large number of migratory birds and other species of birds. Tourists are advised to avoid visiting Veer dam in summer as it is very hot.
