Purpose
‘Sustainable Tourism’ or ‘tourism in the green economy’ has been defined as tourism activities that can be maintained indefinitely in the environmental, social, economic and cultural contexts.

What Is It?
Sustainable Tourism is an initiative to turn a traveler into a responsible tourist. This initiative urges the tourists to step out of their comfort zones and behave considerately while travelling. It reminds the traveler that their vacation destination is someone’s home.
Description
The various factors that form a part of Sustainable Tourism are Environment, Heritage, Culture, Economic, Social and Experiential sustainability. Tourism developed by using “sustainability as a guide will assist in maintaining the cultural, social and ecological aesthetics while ensuring stable economic growth. With Maharashtra being the premier global product and the award-winning promotion campaign “Maharashtra… Unlimited” the potential of this destination has been unleashed with a solid boost. Maharashtra has an immense variety of locations with its natural beaches, heritage and culture.
Uses To Tourists / People
Sustainable Tourism is also defined as ‘tourism that meets the needs of the present tourist and host regions while protecting and enhancing opportunity for the future. Tourists ranging from leisure, adventure, sports, MICE can contribute to Sustainable Tourism.
How It Benefits The Community / Tourists
Creating awareness amongst tourists by promoting small initiatives like go green, zero carbon footprint, focus on eco-friendly products, support local products, walk where possible, take care of heritage places and promote sustainable tourism amongst co-travelers are a few ways to explore this segment.
Examples
Eco-tourism in Saguna Baug is a great destination to understand the insights of agriculture, enjoy trekking and various adventurous activities. The state’s 720 km long coastline is rapidly emerging as a prime destination based on the theme of sustainable tourism. With ropeways, heritage seaports, underwater sports, laser shows for Island development and global events like Turtle Festival at Velas, Murud Janjira Festival, Mango Festival, Katha Shilp Mahotsav promoting the local, inheritance, culture and tradition, Sustainable Tourism stands as the key ingredient at all times.
