CSMT Railway Station
Tourist Destination / Place
ChhatrapatiShivajiMaharaj Terminus is also known as CSMT. It is the oldest and one of the most famous railway stations in India, now inscribed as a World Heritage site.
Districts / Region
Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.
Unique Features / Exclusivity
ChhatrapatiShivajiMaharaj Terminus is a UNESCO world heritage site. It is the oldest station in Mumbai. CSMT is an important station on both Harbour and Central railway lines.
The station is connected with almost all important cities in India and is also the busiest in Mumbai. It is the only World Heritage Site to get a footfall of about 3 million commuters daily.
The original name of the station was BoriBundar, due to the proximity of the station to the port of the same name. Earlier it was known as Victoria Terminus and was renamed as ChhatrapatiShivajiMaharaj Terminus. The station is well known for its Indo-Saracenic Victorian-Gothic architecture. Fredrick William Stevens was the architect who built the building in 1878.
This building represents the impact of Victorian Italianate Gothic Revival Architecture and Classical Indian architecture. It is the finest example of industrial technologies mingled with the Gothic Revival Style in India. The centrally domed office structure has a 330-foot-long platform connected to a 1,200-foot-long train shed. Its outline provides the skeleton plan for the building. Astonishingly, CSMT's dome of dovetailed ribs is constructed without centring. This is regarded as a novel experiment and achievement of the era. It comprises a series of large rooms with high ceilings. This is a building that is utilitarian and has undergone various changes required by the users, which is not always sympathetic. The building is beautiful and constructed in a ‘C’ shape. It is crowned with the prominently visible central dome. The dome is constructed in an octagonal ribbed shape. It is built with a colossal female figure symbolizing Progress. The figure is holding a torch centring upwards in her right hand and a spoked wheel in her left hand.
A statue of Queen Victoria was installed on the facade of the building which was removed after the independence of India. It is believed that the statue of Queen Victoria seen in the vicinity of BhauDaji Lad Museum is the same one.
The first train in India was run by the Great Indian Peninsula Railway from BoriBundar to Thane on 16th May 1853. Since then, the station has played a significant role in the development of Mumbai. The premise was targeted in the 2008 terrorist attacks on Mumbai.
Today a small railway museum is housed in the building.
