Traditions of Maharashtra
Tradition of Maharashtra descriptions
Maharashtra is the third largest state in India. It has a long history of Marathi saints in the Warkari religious movement like Dnyaneshwar, Namdev, Chokhamela, Eknath and Tukaram, which is the foundation of Maharashtra culture or Marathi culture. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire in the 17th century, had a great influence on Maharashtra and India and his concept of Hindavi Swarajya underlines the concept of people's self-government. Lord Ganesha, Maruti, Mahadev in the form of Shivalinga, Khandoba, Kalubai Devi and Lord Vitthal are some of the deities worshiped by Hindus in Maharashtra. Maharashtra is divided into different regions like Marathwada, Vidarbha, Khandesh and Konkan. Everyone has their own cultural identity in the form of different dialects of Marathi language, folk songs, food and ethnicity.
